Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer has said that the impact player rule in the Indian Premier League is a major concern for Indian cricket. He took to Twitter to explain his problems with the rule, that was introduced in the tournament in the last season. Jaffer said that IPL should take away the rule as it hampers the use of allrounders.
According to the impact player rule, any team during the game can substitute a member of the playing XI from anyone out of five substitutes named beside the starting XI during the toss.
Jaffer argued that because of the use of the rule in domestic cricket too, India may struggle to create a good supply line of allrounders in the future.
"I think IPL needs to take away the impact player rule, as it's not encouraging the all-rounders to bowl much and lack of ARs and batters not bowling is a major area of concern for Indian cricket," Jaffer tweeted.
The impact player rule was imported from the Big Bash League and tried out in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy ahead of IPL 2023. The rule lessened a side's dependence on allrounders because they could use specialist players by substituting another player.
As per the impact player rule, sides can change one player in the middle of the match to suit the conditions of the game and the ground better in their favour. The impact player could be introduced before the beginning of the innings, after an over finishes, at the fall of a wicket, or in between an over.
Chennai Super Kings pacer Tushar Deshpande became the first impact player in IPL history after he was brought in for Ambati Rayudu in the IPL 2023 opener against Gujarat Titans.
The IPL auction for the 2024 season will be held on December 19 in Dubai.
