Not MS Dhoni! Meet First Player To Be Sold In IPL 2008 Auction

MS Dhoni, who was the costliest pick in IPL 2008 auction, wasn't the first player to be sold back then. He was signed by Chennai Super Kings for a sum of more than Rs 6 crore. Rajasthan Royals defeated CSK in the final to lift the IPL trophy.

  • MS Dhoni was the costliest pick in the auction
  • He wasn't the first player to be auctioned
The Indian Premier League (IPL) will complete 17 years in 2024. The 17th auction of the T20 league will take place in Dubai on December 19. This will be the first time when the auction will be held outside of India. There will be a mini-auction this time and it will be a one-day event. Not many big names will be up for grabs during the auction.
There might be a mega-auction next year, which means that the majority of marquee names will be part of the auction. The first-ever mega-auction took place way back in 2008. MS Dhoni was the biggest name who entered the auction.
Unsurprisingly, he was the costliest pick in the auction and joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for a huge sum of Rs 6 crore (approx). While Dhoni was the costliest player, he wasn't the first player to be auctioned.
Late Shane Warne was the first-ever player to be auctioned in IPL's history. Warne had already retired from international cricket and did not draw much interest from the franchises. Rajasthan Royals (RR) was the only team that bid for the Spin King and signed him for Rs 1.8 crore (approx).
RR's decision to sign RR turned out to be a historic one and he propelled the Rajasthan-based franchise to a title win. Shane Warne's RR defeated MS Dhoni-led CSK in a nail-biting final to lift the trophy. They have only played one IPL final since then while CSK have lifted the IPL trophy five times.
Warne continued to play IPL till 2011. He was retained by RR before the IPL 2011 mega-auction for a huge sum of Rs 8.28 crore. Warne made his comeback to IPL as a member of RR's coaching staff in 2018. He passed away in 2022. Warne finished his IPL career with 57 wickets in 55 matches.
