Zara, the Spanish multinational retail clothing chain is facing online backlash after they dropped their latest ad campaign that features white statues with missing limbs surrounded by debris. The pictures have prompted comparisons to Gaza's devastation.
The campaign, titled “The Jacket” is part of the brand’s Atelier series, and describes the line as "a limited edition collection from the house celebrating our commitment to craftsmanship and passion for artistic expression".
The campaign features Kristen McMenamy who is seen carrying a mannequin over her shoulder with one hand which is covered in white cloth, while the rest of the mannequins appear to be missing their limbs. These images were unsettling for many as they showcased bodies wrapped in white body bags reminiscent of Islamic burial garments.
The whole set of the shoot features elements like rubble and rocks. It even has a cardboard cutout lying on one side which people pointed out to be resembling the upside-down map of Palestine. People on social media are drawing comparisons between the representation and pictures of the dead from the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. This has led to online public outrage with people calling for a boycott of Zara.
Ever since the brand dropped their latest campaign it caught the netizens attention. Many on social media over the weekend started calling for a boycott of Zara as the campaign photos went viral. The company has since taken off the pictures from their social media handles as well as their website. However, amidst all this backlashes the company has not issued a public acknowledgement or statement yet.
Zara's founder, Amancio Ortega, is the 14th richest person in the world, with an estimated net worth of US$75 billion. Zara is among the wealthiest clothing retailers in the world.
However, this is not the first for the brand. Zara found itself at the receiving end of an uproar in 2021 following their head designer Vanessa Perilman’s anti-Palestine remarks made on social media.
