Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan won the Budhni seat with the highest-ever victory margin and vote count on Sunday. Notably, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader emerged victorious from the constituency by a margin of 1,04,974 votes.
This is the fifth time Chouhan has defeated his rivals from Budhni in the state Assembly elections. He has held the seat since 2006. He garnered 1,64,951 votes, while his main opponent, Vikram Mastal Sharma of Congress, managed to get 59,977 votes.
In the 2018 Assembly polls, the 64-year-old won the seat with a margin of 58,999 votes. Prior to that, in 2013, he claimed the constituency with the second-highest margin of 84,805 votes. In 2014, the vote margin was 41,525 votes. Chouhan won the 2006 by-elections from Budhni by more than 36,500 votes.
It should also be noted that the vote margin with which the chief minister has won is highest across assemblies in MP in the current election.
The self-proclaimed 'Mama' of citizens, the BJP veteran has served as the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh since 2005. With the Congress winning the 2018 polls and Kamal Nath taking over his post, he had a short break from 2018 to 2020. Although, he grabbed the post again and has already earned the tag of the longest-serving CM in the state.
About Budhni Assembly Constituency
Budhni is one of the Assembly seats of Madhya Pradesh's Sehore district. It is a part of Vidisha Lok Sabha constituency. The Budhni Assembly constituency is a general seat, i.e. it is not reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) or Scheduled Tribes (STs). The voting here took place on November 17.
Aazad Samaj Party's (Kanshi Ram) Dinesh Azad was also contesting from the same seat and secured 3rd position in the tally.
Earlier in the day Chouhan was seen in a jubilant mood at his residence and flashed a victory sign at CM House along with his family, in Bhopal.
Chouhan along with his family greeted party workers and supporters in Bhopal and later exchanged greetings with state BJP president VD Sharma and union minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw was also present.
Chouhan relied heavily on schemes for women like the 'Ladli Behna Yojana' under which Rs 1,250 is transferred monthly to eligible women from poor families in the state.
While Congress described it as an election sop, implemented months before the assembly polls, the BJP leaders have said that it is in line with the party's work for empowering women
