Tennessee Titans legend Frank Wycheck passed away on December 10, a statement from his family confirmed.
“At this time, it appears Wycheck fell inside his Chattanooga, TN home and hit his head Saturday morning,” the statement read. "He was found unresponsive that afternoon.”
The family "plans to work with experts for ongoing brain injury (TBI) and CTE research,” a condition that Wycheck had feared would haunt him.
Wycheck leaves behind two adult daughters, Deanna and Madison, both married, and three grandchildren - Leo, Stevie and August.
Concerns About CTE
Back in 2017, Wycheck had told ESPN that he feared a similar fate as other football concussion victims, and claimed that he was certain he had CTE.
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a brain condition thought to be linked to repeated head injuries and blows to the head. It slowly gets worse over time and leads to dementia, but the right help and support can manage the symptoms.
"I worry about, I'm scared about the time if I actually get to that point where these guys [who have committed suicide] have snapped," he had said. "What has made them snap? And that is what I am scared of, that there is something that is going to come over me that is going to make me snap."
"I don't think I am going to do it, but those guys you would never think in a million years would. And that's the scary part about it. There is no one that can tell you really anything. It's just, the damage is done."
His Sterling Professional Career
A linebacker and running back as a kid, he played running back in college at Maryland and fullback in the NFL for Washington before he settled in as a tight end with the Houston Oilers and Tennessee Titans.
Wycheck played 11 seasons in the NFL from 1993-2003. He started his career in Washington, staying there for two seasons before joining the Houston Oilers in 1995. He remained with the franchise when it moved and became the Titans in 1997 and through the end of his career.
Wycheck made three Pro Bowls from 1998-2000 and was named All-Pro in 2000. But perhaps his most famed moment was the "Music City Miracle," a legendary kickoff return for a touchdown that secured a wild-card win for the Titans over the Buffalo Bills in the playoffs after the 1999 season.
Wycheck finished his career with 505 receptions for 5,126 yards and 28 touchdowns.
Tributes pour in from football fans all over the world, mourning the star's loss.
