Jaipur: With the counting of votes for the Rajasthan Assembly Elections on Sunday, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seems to inch closer towards forming a government in the state this year.
According to latest trends, at the time of writing, the BJP has won or is leading in 116 seats, and the Congress has won or is leading in 69 seats.
The saffron party has not announced any names for the chief ministerial post in Rajasthan, however, one of the popular candidates is said to be Diya Kumari, a member of the erstwhile royal family of Jaipur.
She is contesting from Jaipur's Vidyanagar East and is reportedly being seen as one of the top choices for the Rajasthan CM post, along with Vasundhara Raje, who has won the election by 53,193 votes.
Kumari is the daughter of the last ruling maharaja of the princely state of Jaipur, Man Singh II. She has become popular for being the “princess who walks on streets” and the “daughter of Jaipur”.
She joined the BJP in 2013 and won the Sawai Madhopur constituency the same year. She was elected as the Member of Parliament from Rajsamand in 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Kumari won the seat by the margin of 5.51 lakh votes.
Kumari, aged 54, appealed for votes with the pitch to work for education, healthcare, environment, and women empowerment. She was even elected as the member of the government's National Tiger Conservation in the year 2019.
Expressing confidence about the BJP’s win in Rajasthan, Kumari told NDTV on Sunday, “The BJP is winning in three states. This has exceeded our expectations. The party workers are extremely happy. The public has uprooted the corrupt Congress government and voted for the BJP for development.”
Asked about if she wants to become the CM, she said the BJP high command take decisions on such matters and the question makes no sense to her.
