This was once again visible on Sunday when the 60-year-old used a ballboy to pass a secret note to goalkeeper AS Roma keeper Rui Patricio during a pulsating 1-1 draw against Fiorentina where Mourinho's team were down to just nine-men.
After a goalless first half, the game opened up in the 60th minute when Lukaku headed in to make it 1-0. But four minutes later, Roma's Nicola Zalewski was sent off and Lucas Martínez Quarta equalised after that.
It became a nightmare for Roma when Lukaku was given a straight red in the 87th minute for a poor challenge on Fiorentina's Christian Kouame.
With nine players on the pitch against Fiorentina's eleven, Stadio Olimpico held its breath as the match went down to the wire.
But Mourinho, who recognizes the ball boy's impact on the game's tempo and strategy, managed to pass a note to his goalkeeper Rui Patricio, which most likely had instructions on how to see out the game.
The moment went viral on social media after the game.
