New York City: The United Nations General Assembly is expected to vote on a draft resolution seeking a pause in the Israel-Hamas War. The 193-Member states of the UNGA will take a call tomorrow - December 12, 2023 - regarding the Gaza ceasefire.
The decision for a vote in the UN General Assembly comes after the United States exercised its veto for a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza presented by the United Arab Emirates,
In October, after multiple failed attempts to pass a resoltuion in the Security Council, all 193 members were summoned for an emergency session for a ceasefire in Gaza.
A resolution presented by the Arab nations led by Jordan was presented and adopted after it received 121 votes in favour. 14 countries including the US and Israel voted against the resolution and 44 abstained from voting.
The resolution called for "an immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities."
A month later, a truce was declared between Israel and Hamas on November 24, 2023, which led to a seven-day ceasefire in Gaza.
However, the war resumed on December 1, 2023, after Israel claimed Hamas violated the truce by initiating rocket fire towards Israel. Since then, Israeli forces have increased their attacks in the Gaza Strip, this time focusing on southern Gaza.
As per the latest reports, the UN General Assembly will likely meet tomorrow to vote on the resolution demanding another ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution also seeks the protection of civilians and access to urgent humanitarian aid in the war-torn strip.
