MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi on Sunday issued a statement saying the 'secret memo' reported by The Intercept, saying that the Indian government asked consulates to launch a crackdown scheme against Sikh diaspora organizations, is fake. Bagchi further added that it 'is part of a sustained disinformation campaign against India'.
The Intercept on Sunday reported that the Indian government instructed its consulates in North America to launch a 'sophisticated crackdown scheme' against Sikh diaspora in 'Western countries'. The outlet added that the memorandum was issued in April 2023 by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). According to the report, it listed several Sikh dissidents under investigation, including Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Nijjar was killed in June in Canada's British Columbia. Tensions have risen between India and Canada since PM Justin Trudeau alleged that Indian government agents had a part to play in the Khalistani leader's murder.
The report by the Intercept was met with a strong response by the MEA.
"We strongly assert that such reports are fake and completely fabricated. There is no such memo. This is part of a sustained disinformation campaign against India. The outlet in question is known for propagating fake narratives peddled by Pakistani intelligence. The posts of the authors confirm this linkage. Those who amplify such fake news only do so at the cost of their own credibility," Bagchi's statement read.
The Intercept noted that the memo said that 'concrete measures shall be adopted to hold the suspects accountable'. The media outlet further added that it addressed New Delhi's 'growing concerns about its reputation due to activism from Sikh dissident organizations and portrays its political enemies as extremist or even terrorist organizations'.
