India's cricketers are renowned for their athleticism and endurance, often showcasing remarkable fitness levels on the field. But how do they maintain such peak physical condition, especially amidst demanding tours and a gruelling schedule? Ankit Kaliyar, the strength and conditioning coach with the Board of Control for Cricket in India, revealed that every individual has their own training method, and Virat Kohli leads by example, and that has a ripple effect on his teammates as well. Kaliyar also revealed that current captain Rohit Sharma is among the fittest despite looking bulky.
"Rohit Sharma is a fit player and he has good fitness. He looks a bit bulky but he always passes the Yo-Yo test. He is as fit as Virat Kohli. He looks like he is bulky but we have seen him on the field. His agility and mobility is amazing. He is among the fittest cricketers," said Kaliyar in an interview with Times of India.
For the uninitiated, the yo-yo tests have a few variables, among which the most crucial aspect is a score of 17. Any athlete above 17 passes the endurance test and is considered to be fit enough to be a part of the team.
When asked who among the current crop of players is the fittest, Kaliyar mentioned that it was none other than Virat Kohli. Kohli is renowned for his incredible fitness levels and athleticism. His dedication to maintaining peak physical condition has played a crucial role in his success on the field.
"Virat Kohli is the fittest player in the Indian team and the world. The reason behind that is that he's following a strict schedule. Whether he's playing or not, he follows or takes care of his nutrition, training, supplementation and conditioning part really well," he explained.
Kaiyar also spoke about how Kohli became an inspiration for others in the Indian team. He has created a culture of fitness in the team. When your top player is so fit, then you become an example for others. He injects confidence in others. He is the reason why all the Indian players are so fit," Kaliyar added.
