Tel Aviv: As the Israel-Hamas War rages on, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revealed that the Israeli Defence Forces are closing in on Hamas founder Yahya Sinwar. The Hamas founder has been attributed as one of the architects of the October 7 attacks by Israeli officials.
In a video statement, the Israeli Prime Minister stated that IDF have surrounded Sinwar's house, and it was "only a matter of time until they find him".
Sharing his update on social media platform X, the Israeli PM said - "Last night I said that our forces could go anywhere in the Gaza Strip. They are currently surrounding Sinwar's house. His home is not his castle, and he can flee, but it is only a matter of time until we find him”.
As per the Israel Defence Forces, Sinwar is hiding underground. "Sinwar is not above ground; he is underground. I don't want to elaborate where and how and what we know in terms of intelligence. This is not the place to talk about such things in the media. Our job is to find Sinwar and kill him," stated IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari.
Who Is Yahya Sinwar?
Yahya Sinwar is attributed as one of the founders of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. The 61-year-old leader was born and raised in Khan Younis in southern Gaza, which is currently under heavy bombardment from Israeli forces.
As per reports, Sinwar is the one leading negotiations between Israel and Hamas for prisoner-hostage swaps and directing the military operations with other commanders from bunkers beneath Gaza.
The Israel-Hamas war broke out on October 7, 2023, after the militant group launched a surprise attack against Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 240 hostages.
Both rival parties called for a truce from November 24, 2023, onwards which was extended twice. However, citing a violation from Hamas' end during the truce period, Israel resumed its offensive in Gaza on December 1, 2023, this time going full force in southern Gaza.
