Malayalam Actor R Subbalakshmi Dies At 87
Subalakshmi known for appearing in several films and advertisements has passed away at the age of 85. She appeared in films such as Pandippada, Rani Padmini and many more.
R Subbalakshmi Passes Away
Film and television actress, R. Subbalakshmi has passed away at the age of 87. Subbalakshmi, popular for playing the role of grandmother in several films, passed away here on Thursday in Thiruvananthapuram. She was 87.
She had been admitted to the hospital a few days ago following health complaints. Also a singer and composer, she made an unconventional late entry into films with the Prithviraj-starrer Nandanam. She rose to fame with hits such as Kalyanaraman, Rappakal, Thilakkam, CID Moosa, Pandippada, Rani Padmini and many more.
Subbalakshmi no more
Subbalakshmi has acted in several Tamil and Telugu films as well. She was well-known for her role in Gautham Menon’s Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa. She is also popular for playing the titular role in Ammani. Her latest Tamil film was the Vijay-starrer Beast.
She also started in Hindi films with roles in Ek Deewana Tha and Dil Bechara (as late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s grandmother).
With a fondness for arts since childhood, she joined All India Radio (AIR) and made her film entry after she retired from AIR. A Horlicks advertisement led to her first role in the film Nandanam. She later received roles and went on to enjoy success in nearly 75 movies spanning two decades. She also worked as a dubbing artist.

Subbalakshmi was also a TV actor, appearing in several serials, including Doordarshan. She is remembered for her appearances in advertisements as well. She is survived by three children, including actor and dancer Thara Kalyan.
Subbalakshmi's television career was also illustrious, with over 65 serials to her credit on Malayalam TV. Audiences fondly remember her impactful roles in shows like Sreemahabhagavatham, Kunjikkoonan, Oru Penninte Katha, and Seetha Kalyanam, among others. She was last seen playing one of the lead characters in the ongoing Malayalam show, Sudhamani Supera.
