Most of us dread cleaning our homes, especially our toilets and bathrooms, standing near the toilet bowl amid stench, various cleaning solutions and brushes in hand, and wondering where to begin cleaning first. Not to forget the amount of times you have to scrub hard like a madman to get that one grisly spot off the floor.
Some stains and residual deposits are so old that not even chemical products can get rid of them properly. This is where kitchen ingredients come in handy. By mixing certain ingredients, you can make a cleaner on your own that not only leaves your floor stainless but makes it shine brighter than before.

1) Baking Soda - This miracle ingredient has antibacterial and antifungal properties that not only kill germs and mould but get rid of stains and odour as well.
2) Vinegar - Vinegar can sanitise and keep your bathroom fresh for long periods. It can also remove dirt, grease, soap and mineral deposits on the tiles.
3) Lemon Juice - Pouring lemon juice along with baking soda and vinegar acts as the perfect bleaching agent that can erode deposits and freshen the bathroom.
4) Essential Oils - Essential oils often contain antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties along with spreading scent in the bathroom and toilet.
Here's how you can make a DIY solution to clean bathrooms and toilets at home:
- Mix 1/4 cup baking soda and 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in a small bowl. Mix it till you come across a thick paste.
- Mix 1/4 cup vinegar, 2 cups water, and 10 drops of your favourite essential oil in a spray bottle. This can be used to spray and wipe down your tiles, mirrors, and shower.
- To use your cleaner, apply the paste to the scrubbing surfaces such as the toilet bowl, bathtub, bucket or sink and let it sit for 10 minutes. Saturate the paste with the solution and scrub with a brush or sponge. Rinse with water and pat dry with a clean cloth.
- Keep the paste in an airtight container and the solution in a spray bottle to store your cleaner. Be sure to thoroughly shake the solution before each use.
Use this paste and solution whenever needed to keep your bathroom clean and shiny.
