Taking a nice, cool shower is perhaps one of the best ways to de-stress after a long day at work. Standing underneath the cool, running water as it washes off the tiredness sets the perfect tone for the rest of the day. However, what if you turn the faucet on only to realize that the water pressure isn't enough for your much-deserved relaxing shower?
Over time, mineral deposits, dirt, and grease among others form a layer of deposits across the pores due to frequent contact with the water. While it may seem harmless to you at first, these deposits form a thick layer with time and can become a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi which can cause skin infections and diseases.
Instead of running to the store to buy products infused with harmful chemicals that not only corrode the metal but can also negatively impact the environment, you can grab some ingredients easily found in your kitchen to prepare some homemade solutions that can do the trick just fine. Let's take a look at three such solutions:
1) Salt and Lemon Juice

Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent and a common kitchen ingredient used to clean greasy bathroom tiles and other accessories. Its acidic nature can wash off the stubborn deposits while salt can get rid of dirt and grime accumulated in the shower head.
To prepare this solution, you will need:
  • 2 tablespoons of salt
  • 1/4 cup of lemon juice
  • A clean cloth or sponge
Mix the lemon juice and salt in a bowl and dip the cloth or sponge in it. Rub it all over the shower head and leave it for 15 minutes. Pour hot water to wash it off.
2) Coca-Cola and Aluminium Foil

If you don't have vinegar or lemons at home, a simple can of Cola can do just fine. It contains carbonic and phosphoric acid which takes care of the mineral deposits while aluminium can make them clean and shiny.
INGREDIENTS
  • A can of Cola
  • An aluminium foil
If your shower head is detachable, you can simply unscrew it and dip it in a bowl filled with Coke. If not, you can just fill a polybag with the drink and tie it to the shower head while fastening it with a rubber band. Make sure the shower head is fully immersed in the drink. Leave for 30 minutes. Take it out of the Cola and use the shiny part of the foil to cover the shower head. Leave it for 15 minutes and wash it off with hot water.
3) Vinegar and Baking Soda

The oldest trick in the book, vinegar and baking soda are the go-to ingredients to clean bathroom and toilet sinks, tiles and commodes. This combination not only dissolves the grime and deposits but also gets rid of bacteria and fungi for a spick and span bathroom.
To prepare the solution, you will need:
  • A plastic bag
  • 1/4 cup of baking soda
  • 1/2 cup of white vinegar
Mix the solution in a bowl and leave it for some time till you see it fizz. transfer it to a plastic bag. Tie it around the shower head using rubber bands and make sure the shower head is fully submerged in the liquid. You can either leave it overnight or for an hour. Once done, remove the bag and clean the deposits with a cloth or a sponge with hot water.
These DIY solutions are not only cost-effective but take minimum time while delivering excellent outcomes. You can use these three methods and see which works best for you.
