Kolkata Traffic Alert: EM Bypass to Be Closed For One Night For FOB Construction

“The work will require the shutting down of Bypass for barely a few hours at night. We have carried out such blockades in the past. After some basic preparatory work, we will try to complete the work over the coming weekend. We do not think that any elaborate diversions will be required,” said DC (traffic) Yeilwad Shrikant Jagannathrao.

Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is all set to build a foot overbridge (FOB) near Patuli on the EM Bypass by the coming weekend. Ahead of the construction work, the agency has recently sent a letter to Kolkata traffic police regarding a night closure of the road to put up the 43-metre structure.
“The work will require the shutting down of Bypass for barely a few hours at night. We have carried out such blockades in the past. After some basic preparatory work, we will try to complete the work over the coming weekend. We do not think that any elaborate diversions will be required,” said DC (traffic) Yeilwad Shrikant Jagannathrao, as per the TOI report.
KMDA officials mentioned that they hope to finish the work and open the foot overbridge before the new year. This will be the second foot overbridge on the EM Bypass, the first one being at Chingrighata crossing, which was opened in February last year.
Unlike other foot overbridges in the city, the one at Patuli will not have an elevator or stairs but will feature a circular ramp for pedestrians and cyclists. “The idea to have concrete ramps instead of a staircase or a lift was conceptualised so that cyclists could use them. There will be one ramp each on both ends of the FOB,” said an official.
To reduce pedestrian accidents, especially at night, the traffic police have collaborated with KMDA and devised detailed plans. There will be increased police presence on the EM Bypass during the night to enhance safety.
“We keep nakas at Parama Island, Highland Park, Mukundapur Market, and Chowbaga every night. We have now added the Urbana approach road, the 206-bus stand, the Ajoynagar approach, the Dhalai bridge, and another on the Kasba connector to that list,” said an officer at Lalbazar.
