Kolkata: Starting this Saturday, the Rampurhat-Sahibganj section of Eastern Railway will undergo a traffic and power block, affecting the travel plans of numerous passengers for a duration of 13 days. From December 9 to December 21, several train services were cancelled, including the Howrah-Malda Town Intercity Express, Howrah-Jaynagar Express, Howrah-Azimganj Kaviguru Express, and Howrah-Gaya Express.
Additionally, trains cancelled from December 10 to 22 include the Malda Town-Howrah Intercity Express, Jaynagar-Howrah Express, and Gaya-Howrah Express, as per the TOI Report.
Explaining the reasons behind the disruptions, Sanjeev Kumar, the DRM of Howrah, stated on Thursday that the regulations are necessary for the commissioning of the third line between Chatra and Murari, scheduled to commence on December 10.
To ensure the smooth movement of trains during this period, the Howrah-Guwahati Saraighat Express will be diverted via Bandel-Katwa-Azimganj, with stoppages at Bandel, Nabadwip Dham, Katwa, Azimganj, and Jangipur Road, effective from Sunday.
In a separate incident, passengers of the Kolkata-Radhikapur Express narrowly escaped a major accident when the train collided with a truck at a crossing in Farakka, Murshidabad district, West Bengal. Railway sources reported that although there were no casualties, approximately 15 passengers sustained injuries in the late-night incident on December 2. One of the train compartments caught fire due to the collision, but the fire was quickly brought under control by two fire-tenders.
Railway officials, along with the Railway Protection Force (RPF), promptly responded to the scene to assess the situation. Train services on the affected route experienced brief disruptions, with some trains being cancelled and others diverted. However, as of Monday morning, the situation has started to normalise, and train services have been restored.
