India vs South Africa: Shubman Gill's Return Healthy Headache For India, Says Aakash Chopra

The Indian team management, led by skipper Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Rahul Dravid, have to make a tough call as both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad are part of the team. At the top, India will have to pick between the returning Gill and Gaikwad. But if they manage to drop Gaikwad, the highest run-scorer in the Australia series, needs to be seen.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has said that the return of Shubman Gill to the T20I squad is a good headache for the Indian team management. Gill was picked in the 17-man team for what promises to be a thrilling series against the power-packed Proteans. The Gujarat Titans skipper returns to T20Is for the first time since India's tour of the Windies in August.
The Indian team management, led by skipper Suryakumar Yadav and head coach Rahul Dravid, have to make a tough call as both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad are part of the team. One of Jaiswal and Gaikwad have to make way for Gill if the Gujarat captain is to play the first T20I. Gaikwad was in fine form in the recent T20I series against Australia. The Chennai Super Kings star scored 223 runs in five games including a century.
Jaiswal scored 138 runs in five games at a brilliant strike rate of 168.29. They complemented each other well against Australia as the Rajasthan Royals player took the responsibility to provide India with quick starts. He was selfless in his approach although he didn't have a big score to his name.
Chopra said that he doesn't know whom to drop to accommodate Gill in the playing XI. India have a backup wicketkeeper opener in Ishan Kishan in the 17-man team.
"Shubman Gill is back, so I am assuming he will play. He should play the first match itself. If he plays, who will open with him? Both Ruturaj and Yashasvi are standing together and saying that they did well in the last series. Ruturaj scored a century as well and was the highest run-scorer, so he will say he should be played," Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Chopra said that the team management must provide a consistent run to those picked in the first T20I. India have just six more T20Is before the World Cup in June 2024.
"I will keep a close eye on India's selection because whoever you play in the first game, this is your duty that you play them all the matches because it is a three-match series only. So the selection of 17 players may just backfire but that's the way it is," Chopra added.
