Rafael Nadal, the Spanish tennis great, who was out of action for most of 2023 is all set to return to action next year in 2024.
The Spaniard confirmed his appearance in Brisbane in a post on social media that read: "After one year outside of the tour, I think it is the right moment to be back."
"I don’t think I deserve to end like this. I believe I have worked hard all my sports life. So, that my end isn’t here at a press conference. I am going to finish my career in the right way," Nadal added.
"So I feel ready to announce that I will be back in Brisbane in the first week of the season.”
Nadal was last seen in action in a professional tennis match in the second round at Melbourne after which he suffered the hip flexor injury.
The next year’s first major tournament, will be the Australian Open, and it is scheduled to begin on January 14 with the main draw matches.
Nadal has won the tournament twice and it may well be his final year in the sport.
Incidentally last week, Nadal had given a hint that he was on the road to recovery with an interview on atptour.com where he said: “Until now I didn’t know if I would play tennis again someday, and now I genuinely believe I will. I’m still not ready to say when, but I’m able to train increasingly longer, and the progress is good.”
“We know that the pain will never disappear, but I’ve taken a step forward. That’s a lot for me. Talking about tennis is another matter altogether, as is the level I’ll be able to play at. But the steps toward trying to play again have been big and positive, which is what we have been fighting for for several months. I’m confident I’ll be able to say something more specific in the coming weeks,” the 37-year-old added.
