Dickson County, Tennessee, about 20 miles west of Nashville, is facing damage in several areas in the northern part of the county, the sheriff's office reported.
"We have trees down, lines down, and roads blocked," the agency had said in a social media post. "Please stay home and off the roads while emergency personnel are out working."
A dispatcher at the site had told weather.com in a phone call that there was "a lot" of damage and the call center was extremely busy.
Police in Clarksville, Tennessee, also say that they are responding to numerous locations in the county due to extensive damage from a tornado that touched down around 1:30 p.m. EST.
There was no immediate news reported on any potential injuries or deaths.
Residents of 21 counties in Tennessee are being asked to stay home and off the roadways.
Plans had been underway to repurpose an elementary school as an emergency tornado shelter, but those had to be scrapped due to a power outage. About 21,000 homes and businesses were without electricity as of 5:30 p.m. EST, according to PowerOutage.us.
