On Sunday afternoon, Garner, a town in Wake County, North Carolina, experienced a potential tornado, leading to fallen trees, downed power lined and damaged homes. Photos and videos shared on social media captured the aftermath of the incident. Garner, with over 34,000 residents, is a suburb of Raleigh. There were no reports of injuries, however, it remained unclear if the damage is from a tornado or heavy winds.
According to local reports, damage was reported in intersection of Timber Drive and Woodland Road, and on Spring Drive in front of Garner High School.
A special weather statement has been issued for Raleigh, Cary and Apex until 3:30 PM EST, with residents being asked to "seek shelter in a sturdy structure."
Tornado warnings were issued for several counties in central North Carolina. The Greensboro Science Center canceled the Winter Wonderland lights show due to the possibility for severe weather. The show was scheduled for Sunday night.
"Due to the severe weather forecast, the GSC has made the decision to cancel the Winter Wonderlights show for Sunday, 12.10.23, for the safety of our staff and guests. Understanding the inconvenience, we are making all tickets for Sunday, 12.10.23, usable from 12.11.23 to 12.31.23. We hope everyone stays safe and dry tonight!" the center said in a post on Facebook.
According to reports, over 2,932 power outages have been reported in North Carolina so far. At least 656 residents are without power in Forsyth County and 1,272 are without power in Wake County.
