Why You Should Avoid Pairing Eggs and Coffee For Breakfast

Eggs with tea or coffee seem like the perfect options for breakfast. People love to eat eggs along with a cup of tea or coffee for breakfast as it is believed that eggs give you necessary vitamins along with proteins, the tea or coffee gives you a boost of energy in the morning. While this looks like the perfect, it is far from perfect for your body.
Priya Bansal, MSc Nutrition, formerly of Apollo Hospital, Delhi, said, “Eggs and coffee have their own individual benefits and can be enjoyed as part of a balanced breakfast. Eggs are a powerhouse of protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. Coffee is known for its high caffeine content, which gives stimulating effects.”
According to reports on Mirror.co.uk, Bansal explains when these are combined, several factors come into play and can have potential side effects on a lot of people. When you eat eggs and coffee together, it can interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients. Coffee has tannins and polyphenols which can stand in the way of the absorption of iron and calcium which are essential nutrients found in eggs.
Food experts at Prepped Pots also advised that you shouldn’t drink tea or coffee atleast an hour after eating eggs, according to reports on Huffington Post.
OnlyMyHealth reports that combining eggs and coffee can also lead to digestive problems. This happens because both eggs and coffee can stimulate the production of gastric acid, which can eventually lead to acid reflux, heartburn or an upset stomach.
Along with these, eggs and coffee also have diuretic properties, which can make you dehydrated as you tend to urinate more. When you eat these foods, make sure you drink more water. Drinking more water becomes all the more important when you have eggs and tea or coffee together.
Lastly, Bansal also says that coffee can also interfere with the absorption of several other medicines, including antibiotics or antacids. So drinking it at the same time as eating eggs could further disrupt the absorption, affecting their efficacy.
Not just eggs and tea or coffee, there are several other foods that you shouldn’t eat at the same time.
Reports on Huffing Post say that you should eat yoghurts and fruit at the same time. “Yoghurt is alkaline and popular fruits like blueberries and strawberries are acidic so if this is one of your breakfast faves, instead opt for alkaline fruits like raspberries and bananas.”
Another combination of food one should avoid is fruits and cereals. “If you have a slightly more sensitive stomach, you may want to avoid combining fruits with grains, even if they seem like a natural combo. This is because there is a difference in digestion time for the two — fruits are easily digested while grains take longer. The two together can cause discomfort.”
