The songs Nikle The Kabhi Hum Ghar Se and Va Va Voom have nothing in common, except the poet-lyricist Javed Akhtar who has penned both the numbers. While Nikle The Kabhi is an evocative number from the on-release Shah Rukh Khan starrer Dunki, the Va Va Voom song is a part of Shah Rukh’s daughter Suhana’s debut film Archies.
In mood sound and poetry, I have not heard two more dissimilar songs in recent times.
It is hard to believe that both the songs are written by the same poet, the master of accessible and articulate thoughts Javed Akhtar.
Interestingly, this is not the first time Javed Saab has written polarized poetry in two separate films during the same year. Compare the period-friendly nostalgic lines of Lagaan with the youthful vibes of modern poetry in Dil Chahta Hai. Both during the same year. Or the regal bearing of the lyrics in Jodha Akbar with the contemporary throb of the thoughts in Rock On: both during the same year and worded by Javed Saab.
How does he do it?
“In order to get the mood and aura of the theme right you have to feel the pulse of the period. I couldn’t have written Va Va Voom for Dunki or Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe in Lagaan. The words to the songs have to resonate with the characters and their mood,” says Javed Saab.
