New Delhi: The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced plans to introduce Open Loop National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC) in a phased manner, which will allow commuters to use a single card for metro and bus travel across the country. The NCMC cards will replace the existing Closed Loop Delhi Metro Smart Cards, according to a statement made by Minister of State in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Kausal Kishore.
The NCMC cards are designed to be a user-friendly and convenient payment option, facilitating cashless transactions. By adopting the NCMC system, DMRC aims to enhance the travel experience of commuters by enabling them to use their bank-issued NCMC cards for fare payments on metros and buses throughout the country.
The NCMC cards, issued by banks, are secure and prepaid, adhering to the dual interface EMV+ standard. Additionally, the NCMC card is integrated with the Paytm Payments Bank wallet, enhancing its usability for various purposes such as travel, in-store payments, and online shopping.
Unlike closed loop cards that are limited to specific operating environments, the open loop NCMC cards are widely accepted at all retail point-of-sale (POS) devices. The DMRC has already begun the process of converting fare gates to accept NCMC cards since October 2021.
The introduction of NCMC also promotes cashless transactions, aligning with the government's initiative to create a digital and hassle-free payment ecosystem. Users can easily recharge their NCMC cards online or at designated recharge points, ensuring a convenient and seamless management of their cards.
Furthermore, the DMRC has reported that there have been no delays or challenges in implementing the NCMC system due to the guidelines set by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The transition to NCMC is in line with the progressive shift observed by other metro rail systems from the Closed Loop Card System to the open loop NCMC.
