Doctors said these were a type of roundworm – Filarioidea, which normally passes through fly bites, but the woman says she believes she caught them from larvae on infected cats or dogs.
She said they may have entered her eyes after she petted the animals, got the larvae on her hands, and then scratched her eye.
Some types of roundworms that live in the eye are known to cause blindness, but they are more commonly found in Africa rather than in China. The infestation of these parasitic worms causes conditions like gnathostomiasis, loiasis, onchocerciasis, toxocariasis, and ocular cysticercosis.
