Rajasthan, which has given a clear, decisive mandate to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Assembly Elections 2023, could soon have its own 'Yogi' at the helm, according to media reports. Baba Balaknath, who is a spiritual leader and BJP MP from Alwar, is popularly referred to as the 'Yogi of Rajasthan' and is said to be among the top contenders for the chief minister's post.
Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, hailed him as 'Tijara Ka Sitara' while campaigning for him in the constituency in Rajasthan. Baba Balaknath, like Yogi, is from the Nath sect, a Shaiva sub-tradition within Hinduism. Baba Balaknath won Tijara against Congress's Imran Khan by a margin of 6173 votes.
When asked if he would be made the next Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Baba Balaknath said the decision lay with the party leadership.
"Our Prime Minister is the face of the BJP and we will continue to work under his leadership. The decision on who will be the Chief Minister will also be taken by the party. I am happy as an MP and want to serve society and I am very satisfied with it," he said.
Earlier, Baba Balaknath had compared his contest against Khan to an "India-Pakistan" match.
"This is like an India-Pakistan match this time. It is not just a fight for victory, it is also a fight for voting percentage," the Alwar MP had reportedly said.
Rajasthan went to polls on November 25. The BJP won the state by a comfortable majority, crossing the halfway mark and securing 115 of 199 seats. The Congress secured victory in 69. The BJP did not project a chief ministerial face ahead of the elections and speculation is rife about a close contest between former chief minister Vasundhara Raje and Baba Balaknath for the top post.
Raje won the seat of Jhalarpatan by a margin of 53,193 votes, pipping Ramlal of the Indian National Congress (INC).
Other key winners from the party included Diya Kumari who won from Vidhyadhar Nagar and Colonel Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, who secured Jhotwara.
