Who is a Chiranjivi?

As per the Hindu mythology, there are 7 immortals who are believed to be alive on Earth until the end of Kali Yuga. Chiranjivi is a Sanskrit term that means 'immortal' - 'Chiram' means Permanent, and 'Jivi' means 'Lived'. Here are the 7 Chiranjivis as per the Hindu mythology.

Bajrangbali

Also known as Hanuman, Bajrangbali was one of the greatest devotees of Lord Rama. Pawan Putra Hanuman is known to be selfless and brave. Because of his deep love for Lord Rama, Hanuman received the gift of eternal life, making him a Chiranjivi.

Parashurama

Parashurama is the sixth form of Vishnu, who knows all about astras, shastras, and powerful weapons. According to the Kalki Purana, he'll come back when the world is about to end. At that time, he'll become the martial teacher for Kalki, the last avatar. He'll teach Kalki how to do penance to get special weapons from the heavens. These weapons are super important because they're needed to rescue humans when the world is facing its end.

Vibhishana

Ravana's brother, Vibhishana, joined Rama's side before the fight with Ravana. After Rama defeated Ravana, Vibhishana became the new King of Lanka, who believed strongly in doing what's right. Even though he got a boon for long life, known as Chiranjivi, it's different for him. His gift lets him stay on earth only until the end of the Maha Yuga, not forever like other Chiranjivis.

Kripa

In the Mahabharata, Kripa was the teacher for the royal kids. King Shantanu adopted him. His sister, Kripi, married Dronacharya. He got a blessing for a long life because he treated all his students fairly and cared for them like they were his own children. He and his nephew Ashwatthama are the only ones who survived all the fighters in the big Kurukshetra War.

Ashwatthama​

Ashwatthama is the son of Dronacharya. Drona wanted a son as brave as Shiva, so he prayed really hard for it. Ashwatthama is thought to be one of the eleven Rudra avatars of Lord Shiva. He's supposed to live forever, but Krishna bestowed him with a curse that "he would live forever but with his body covered with painful sores and ulcers that would never be cured".

Mahabali

Mahabali was the ruler of the asuras, who is worshipped in Kerala till today. His son was Banasura. He was a good king ruling over the 3 worlds, the son of Virochana and the grandson of Prahlada, all of them being asuras. Vishnu's Vamana avatar exiled him to the Patalaloka (underworld) to fix how things were in the universe. Every year during Onam people believe that he comes down from the sky to visit them.

Ved Vyas

Ved Vyas is the sage who penned down Mahabharata. His parents are sage Parashara and Satyavati, a fisherwoman. He's also related to the sage Vashishtha as his great-grandson. He was born as the Dvapara Yuga was ending and lived to see the start of the Kali Yuga. However, according to the Vedas, VYas is not immortal but he can live for a very long lifetime as he was able to achieve all yogic siddhis because of his connection with the divine.
